Condition:Wasteland ~ comments, kudos and concerns
« on: August 09, 2013, 08:20:45 PM »
The best way for us to keep improving condition is for us to get feedback from our attendees.

Please leave feedback here in a constructive manner and we will try to correct it for next year our at the very least explain our thoughts on why we do the things we do

- Fursuit games were not good. I don't think anyone really enjoyed themselves and one person ran to the bathroom to puke at one point.
- I got one of the bracelets for the sponsor lounge and the ink in it began to come off and stain the inside of my fursuit. I promptly cut it off.
- There were no directions for the sponsors lounge. I don't know if I would've found it if my room wasn't on the same floor. Maybe move it to the con space if possible. Looks like you need more room for it anyway.
- A floating security person or two would be good to avoid incidents with other people in the hotel.

- Headless lounge was good, but there always seemed to be stuff in front of the water dispenser, kind of hard to get around with feet paws.
- Maybe some video game tournaments?

- the charity auction went really smooth and I had no trouble at all picking up and paying for my item.

I think you really just need to drive to improve attendance, a lot of things like better dances and more space needs more attendance to justify.
I'm not sure if I'll be attending next year, I have really enjoyed myself at Condition. If I do I'd consider volunteering to run the fursuit games and fursuit performance panel for you next year. Sammy seemed really unprepared for both.

Planing and execution really seems to be my problems with condition. Everything seemed to take a long time to set up and start up, registration for example took nearly an hour to get up and running on the first day. Most thing about the con seemed to be put together at the last minute, I was expecting at least a WIP schedule way before the time it came out.

For organising volunteers next year my suggestion would be sending out an email, maybe a month ahead of time seeing what time the volunteers would be interested in volunteering, and for how long. This would give the volunteers an idea of when they would be needed, and it would let the con know what times they needed to fill.

Have information desk near the front entrance of the hotel, that way when people walk into the hotel they would be able to get all the information they needed, AND if there is a spare person at information they would have someone that can do escorts to vehicles, rooms or anywhere else that would be needed.

With the incident that happened to several women that were being harassed just out side the hotel, there was no announcement made, I found out about from a facebook post. I really feel that some kind of announcement should have been made, I think taking a few people and sending them to some common areas and saying there was an incident and if people went out side the con they should not go  alone. I know with the incident it was a group of people but still, information is always a good thing.

The hotel management are morons, I was in the con sweet and one of the managers come up looking for someone because there was a BBQ going in the parking lot, rather then GOING TO THE BBQ, the source of the "problem" then went somewhere else, for someone else. I am sorry If there is something going on, go to where that something is!! LOOK FIRE.....I am going to go next door to see if they know about this fire, it will take me 10 minutes, but it is SOOOooooOOOo much better then grabbing a bucket of water. GRRR

As for what the con did right, they did an amazing job with the story, the panels I did go to were fun, and I got to meet new people. I really want to see how the monster theme works out!!

My crazy suggestion that makes vary little sense is; find a few artist that are willing to take part in making a poster then auction off parts of it for people characters, if the artist charges 20 per character ask for 40 and then give 20 to the charity. This would end up with something like the kingdom come cover(dc comics) and be able to get allot of commission for a few artist and allot of money for the charity.

I was stuck between volunteering and babysitting so I did not get much time to my self, I would like to come back next year. I am not sure if I will be staff or a normal though.

-don't let sam run the fursuit games next time when hes drunk or tired
they were torture , he owns like 4 fursuits he shoulda known allot of what he made us do cant be done in a fursuit

Fursuit track is under review

- make sure things start on time/more pepaired

Anything in particular that ran late ( other then Opening...damn hotel peoples)

- announce/have signs for the parade/photos

Ummm... Ya? can probably do that. Going to add a route to the Map next year and get a boombox or something for music, man it was quiet.

- have a photobooth this year

Will look into it

- get more of others interested into the dances/have more DJS

We take DJ's that want to spin, I thought the ones this year did a fine job. The dances are always going to be small at a small con. Also dancing is scary

- make sure the hotel staff are fully awhere off whats happening and how noisey we are

They heard me doing Karaoke...They know.

- have more advertising done of the con

Yes, Very Yes.

- more events/panels

I agree

- talking the hotel to include the breakfast buffet into the hotel room price

Ill ask but I don't see them doing that, maybe a discount but we already get a big discount on the room cost. Ill ask anyway cause you never know

- more outdoor events

Any suggestions on what kind? If people submit a panel that should be outside, we try to make it happen. Will it Grill is a good example of that. Not a good indoor event

-rent more of the hotel space for more con activity/space

When the con gets bigger, sure.

-variety/masquerade

Variety show was under attended so we went with Furries in Tiarras instead. Variety show may return in the future

- try getting a furry band to come and play

There are furry bands? Neat

-decorate the hotel

If budget ever allows for it/ We decorate the staff and badges instead usually

- movie nights

Sounds like a plan we can bring back

-midnight howl

Ugh,., I was totally going to try to have a "midnight" howl happen at the same time with the other cons happening that weekend and forgot

-night parade(2nd fursuit parade)

People are usually drunk at night and less people are around, so we probably wont have 2 parades. Can always suggest it to programming though. They may disagree with me

- more con swag given out

Such as? We are on a tight budget and we did have collectible swag, custom badges and a nice canteen. Always looking for ideas for future years though

- more con security inside and outside

As we grow, yup

- bigger headless longue

As we Grow

- drink dispensers in the headless longue

There is a dispenser in the lounge already. More could be good

- Fursuit games were not good. I don't think anyone really enjoyed themselves and one person ran to the bathroom to puke at one point.

Fursuit track will be reviewed and adjusted for next year

- I got one of the bracelets for the sponsor lounge and the ink in it began to come off and stain the inside of my fursuit. I promptly cut it off.

ooo...Ill see if we can get some new ones for next year

- There were no directions for the sponsors lounge. I don't know if I would've found it if my room wasn't on the same floor. Maybe move it to the con space if possible. Looks like you need more room for it anyway.

It will be on the map next year, We would love it in con space but then the hotel would have to be in charge of it and the cost is insane. More room would be awesome.

- A floating security person or two would be good to avoid incidents with other people in the hotel.

We have them most of the time, we need to increase the visibility and frequency of the patrols. We also need a few more staff

- Headless lounge was good, but there always seemed to be stuff in front of the water dispenser, kind of hard to get around with feet paws.

Ill add that to someones rounds at the con, I can see that being an easy to fix issue

- Maybe some video game tournaments?

Got lost in a last min shuffle to fill the videogames lead spot. Totally something to fix for next year

- the charity auction went really smooth and I had no trouble at all picking up and paying for my item.

Cool, the same system will be in place next year and at the FE artshow this year

I think you really just need to drive to improve attendance, a lot of things like better dances and more space needs more attendance to justify.

OMG this. Yes exactly. Attendance mean money, money means expansion and the ability to give more to each attendee. I dont want to to be a huge con but another 220 ish people would be awesome

I'm not sure if I'll be attending next year, I have really enjoyed myself at Condition. If I do I'd consider volunteering to run the fursuit games and fursuit performance panel for you next year. Sammy seemed really unprepared for both.

Hope to see you back and if you do want to help out, let us know at Chairman@conditionfurry.ca

Most thing about the con seemed to be put together at the last minute, I was expecting at least a WIP schedule way before the time it came out.

Reg was delayed by 15 minutes due to the wrong database being loaded but people lined up early so it felt like a long time for some. We had a WIP schedule but we don't release it to avoid confusion at the con. Programming earlier is something we try to every year

For organizing volunteers next year my suggestion would be sending out an email, maybe a month ahead of time seeing what time the volunteers would be interested in volunteering, and for how long. This would give the volunteers an idea of when they would be needed, and it would let the con know what times they needed to fill.

Seems like a good plan, ill pass it on to Cajun and Uzi

A good idea if we have the space, otherwise we simply are not permitted to have a table in the lobby. IF we had a space person, that would be cool

With the incident that happened to several women that were being harassed just out side the hotel, there was no announcement made, I found out about from a facebook post. I can see your point, we are looking into protocols and ways to prevent this in the future

other than what was already said, i think you guys need to talk to the mall across the street. people were being extorted off of property when found wearing a con t-shirt, collar, tail and even just the yellow con badges. im guessing small town values but still.

Had no issues with my tail in the mall. Then again I'd question and ask for names and follow through if I had been asked to ensure there is a clear rule set with the mall. No heads is understandable but anything else may be considered descrimitory which is illegal.

London is one of the largest cities in Ontario - sounds more like someone in the mall being a dork.

Isaac's and I's experiences:

1. More involvement with the storyline. We both felt that this year felt rather hollow. The last few years I felt I had more involvement with the story (spy game, rum running etc) and there seemed this year to be a lot of points brought up that really went no where. Many of the faction descriptions had all these points that I didn't hear brought up again. We get that maybe it's a staffing issue, but don't be afraid to ask for more volunteers/staff. Isaac and I would have been willing to help out.

2. Assassin game issues: Specifically Isaac with this one.
Isaac: The game's a lot of fun but there's a few just overall problems that happen with it. One being if a target is in a panel then the assassin loses an hour+ of their con experience having to wait. Riffti wanted me to take photos of the parade for her but I wound up stuck waiting for a panel to end and missed it. I managed to watch from the door and tried to get out a few times but the rules are very restrictive. I get not wanting to interrupt someone else's experience fully fine but there needs to be more correlation between the game and the rest of the con, because as a result we have people who want to attend and play crossing with those who JUST want to play, and then both tend to get the short end.

3. Perhaps put a small section about fursuit etiquette into the conbook for BOTH suiters and non suiters. I found I had a problem with people walking the hotel in a fullsuit minus their head. I mean, I get it, you're hot and need to take a breather. Go into a panel if you need to, go to the lounge, try and get to your room. Don't wander the lobby headless, where there are non-con goers. This ruins the magic! Also, it's not cool to sit in a long event (like the auction) in your suit minus your head. Get out of the suit or wear it. We have a headless lounge for a reason. Added to the fact, a couple of times I tried to get back to my friend's room to get out of my own suit and found myself crammed at the back of a hot elevator. I'm hot already, trying to get somewhere I can change. It's not cool to be forced to the back while more and more people crowd on.

4. More control in panels. I don't think Welnis will bring it up, but during the Pokemon biology was a big one. We had two parties in the front who were constantly yelling out and making a scene, and I felt it ruined the experience for everyone. Like they'd yell out middle of him talking and then he, trying to keep some control, would wind up stuck on their tangent to hopefully get them calmed down so he could run the panel, and due to this he couldn't touch on many of the points he wanted to. The ability to you know, maybe have a warning for them or something? Cause they were at quite a few panels and events with the same general outcome. They sucked a lot of the fun away being so... Obnoxious. People who would normally have a lot to contribute to the panel didn't this year, because even they were being cut off by inane points. No one wants to be the one to say "SHUT UP OR GET OUT", even though we were muttering it among ourselves.

5. Maybe try to involve people into the con? I know it's something that can't really be helped but we had higher attendance overall but lower turn out for EVERY panel. It was total roomcon this year. Full rooms were filled to like, one row. There were several panels that had like two people show up, total. Even the bigger panels, like Pokemon Biology. Usually it fills half of the large room. This year, it was maybe two and a half rows. The fursuit games was half a room tops, and half the size it usually is, making the competitors feel cramped. I was afraid I was going to step on someone. Especially since people weren't in their chairs, so when I went to where my friends were with my water, I was trying to navigate people sitting on the floor.

6. Lack of debit and credit at the auction. Monetary turn out for the auction was low, we all know it. Usually we have ~10K worth of donated money. This year was ~5.5K. People did not have the freedom to use their money. Most people don't carry a lot of cash on them. The only reason I bid as much as I did was I took extra money out of the ATM when getting an item from the dealer's den. Also, speaking of the dealer's den. Ouch. It felt so empty this year. No one had tails. What the heck! What furry con has no tails for sale? One of the only people with accessories (hats and the like) was anti-fur. And therefore, was (IMO) overcharging quite a bit for everything, even non-accessories. No one wanted to spend their money which would be their carry-cash at the dealers den, which helped the auction with no debit/credit, but then we see the significant dent in BOTH areas. Dealers don't want to pay the extra for the table and sell nothing, and the auction, as respectable as 5.5K is, can do SO much better.

I think that's most of our major issues. If I can think of anything else I'll post it. We're sorry if we're going on a bit of a tangent, or if this seems negative. We did have a good time, and we understand that you guys have a LOT of angles to work with putting on the con. We will definitely be going back next year, and we really hope that all of our friends feel the same way.

WTF
